How Much Does a Hive Weigh? Reading the Hive Scale Through the Season

How much does a hive weigh sounds like a simple question, but the answer depends on the season, the colony's strength and the hive type. The weight of a hive changes every day - and during a strong nectar flow, every hour. This guide walks through typical hive weights across the season, what sudden weight changes mean and what a hive scale can tell you about the state of an apiary.

Typical hive weight across the season

Hive weight depends heavily on the hive type and number of supers, but as a rough orientation an empty wooden hive with full equipment weighs several dozen kilograms. In spring, as the colony grows and the nectar flow starts, hive weight steadily rises. In summer, during the main flow, a hive with honey can reach over a hundred kilograms. After a harvest the weight drops sharply; in autumn, with winter stores in place, it climbs again. Even without exact numbers, the direction of the change is the most valuable information for the beekeeper.

What sudden weight changes mean

A sudden change in hive weight is always a signal that something is going on. A drop of a kilogram or more at night, with no flow, points to a possible theft, a tipping or an absconding colony. A flat reading mid-season while neighbouring hives keep growing means that one particular colony has stopped working. Unexpected spikes upward are usually rain pooling on the lid - a hive scale shows all of these situations immediately.

When the hive is ready to harvest

An experienced beekeeper reads the right harvest moment off the hive weight chart. Once the main flow ends, daily gains drop close to zero - that's exactly when frames are capped and honey can be taken. The scale helps avoid two common mistakes: harvesting too early (frames not yet full) and harvesting too late (colony already eating its own stores).

Wintering - the critical store mass

In winter, hive weight steadily decreases as the colony eats its stores. At the start of wintering the hive needs to be heavy enough for the bees to make it through to spring - the exact number depends on region and colony strength, but every beekeeper should know the minimum mass for their hives. A hive scale lets you watch the drop all winter and react if the colony is consuming stores faster than expected. That's literally the difference between a safe wintering and a lost colony.
